PROJECT ICP

SUSTAINABLE COFFEE PRODUCTION.

The primary objective of project ICP is to improve the standard of living conditions of small coffee farmers, organized in the municipalities of Tamahu and San Cristóbal in the department of Alta Verapaz through sustainable coffee production and strengthening of self-managed operations.

Sustainable coffee production is one of the most important strategies for the transition of the coffee sector. To protect the environment, contributing to improving the quality of life of the families, the economic viability, the competitiveness, and the sustainability of the coffee operations. Additionally, it maintains the Earth's productivity and it provides opportunities to sell into the specialty market. The coffee producing communities of both municipalities mentioned are located, in their majority, with altitudes over the 1.250 above sea level (asl (75%), being less representative the areas with 1.000 altitudes of above sea level (asl) (25%). In addition, the natural climatic conditions of the zone, guarantee the type of coffee that is classified as Strictly Hard Beans (SHB), therefore this coffee has future handling qualities, because the demand of these special coffees is stable and good.

For such reasons, any strategy of quality and diversification that is implemented must not have negative impacts in the environment, especially in the biodiversity and the use of water.
